Shimano Talic 8 |
Shimano tell us that the Talica reel is the best lever drag casting reel ever produced. With a drag capable of fishing heavy braid even on the tiny Talica 8 these reels are set to become a classic with those that like little reels that really pack a punch.
Small skirted lures like the Pakula Fluzi are perfect for ultralight line trolling. |
The Features: OK first off the reel has a cold forged (for strength) and machined aluminium frame. The frame is then treated with Shimano’s E.I. Surface Treatment for better corrosion protection. To help with castability the spool is comprised of cold forged lightweight aluminium. Each reel has 6 sealed anti rust bearings, the highest quality in Shimano reels and as many as you’ll find in the small Tiagras. The carbon drag system allows a maximum drag of 9 kilos with a maximum strike drag of 6 kilo giving the little reel ample pressure to fish braided lines in the 15 and 24 kilo class.
At this size SBTs are a pest to anglers trolling 24kg tackle but are a whole world of fun on ultralight line and a small lever drag like the Talica 8 |
While we’re talking drags the Talica’s drag becomes waterproofed when engaged making it impervious to the perils of harsh, wet environments like the back deck of a game boat or a rock ledge showered with spray. With a gear ratio of 6.2:1 there’s plenty of speed for spinning up high speed predators like mackerel or for cranking jigs up from the deep. This is by far the smallest lever drag in the Shimano range and at only 450 grams comes in at half the weight of the Tiagra 12.
While Shimano tout this reel as a small reel for heavy braids we see it as also being a great ultralight tackle game reel. For those of you with an itch for chasing big fish on 4 kilo and lighter lines this could just the be the reel for you. Personally we can’t wait to give it a work out on the school size Southern Bluefin Tuna that have plagued southern game fisherman for several years now.
Yes even I get amongst the light line action every now and then! |
